A greying population, not enough babies – this is plaguing many Asian nations…

First there was a baby boom and population controls. Now, we have a greying population and not having enough babies to sustain the population. These are familiar situations in many Asian countries that have seen significant growth in the last 2-3 decades. First it was a problem in Japan, then Korea, Singapore. Now, the impact is really felt in China even as it reverses its 1 child policy. Many young couples are concerned about the costs & efforts of bringing up children and prefer to indulge in themselves when they are young. Some countries have introduced economic incentives to encourage younger couples to have children. I am convinced that no fiscal policies will be able to address this. It has to go back to our good old instincts as “creatures made in the image of God, who are commanded to be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over all the earth”. We have to realise the joy we miss in parenting and bringing up children as part of the limited time we have on this earth.
