Trade war shaved US$1.2 trillion from global output…

I have always wondered what President Trump’s true intent of the US-China trade war was. Was it to fund the construction of the wall at the US-Mexican border? The fact is that the federal government collects a lot of revenue – but where does it go to? On the other hand, US consumers end up paying more for their goods and the global output goes down by US$1.2 trillion affecting every country on earth. This works out to about US$200B impact on the US economy. Is this really the right thing to do? Or are there really more significant reasons that we are missing? Views?
