At the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem is a garden called Gethsemane. Traditionally, this is recognised as the place where Jesus prayed prior to His crucifixion, so intensely that He sweated drops of blood.
The fact is that Jerusalem had been destroyed and reconstructed several times. Hence, locations may have changed. However, there are some landmarks that can help provide a certain degree of accuracy in determining whether this garden was indeed where the original Garden of Gethsemane was located.
With the discovery of the Gihon springs (which continues to run even till today), we know where the Hezekiah Tunnel is located. That is also the City of David. Looking across from the City of David is the Mount of Olives. And this garden is just at the foot of the Mount of Olives, directly opposite the Temple Mount.
According to tradition, this garden was purchased by the Sarajevo Knights and donated to the Franciscans in 1681.
When I visited the garden in Dec 2018, it was a place of serenity. A very helpful place to contemplate the work of Jesus Christ for His people.
