Historically, this was the place where King Saul’s body was placed after he died, following a battle with the Philistines as we read in 1 Sam 31:10, where it was called Beth Shan at that time.
“Then they put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.” ——- 1 Sam 31:10
Throughout the centuries, this place has also been an R&R spot for troops that conquered Israel. So you find all kinds of facilities here, including an ancient amphitheatre.
