How does eating beef affect climate change?

I have often been told that we need to eat less meat to slow down climate change. Just how is eating meat, and in particular beef related to climate change?

I realised now that it has to do with the generation of the gas methane by these animals’ digestive system. The more we demand for these animals, the more they will be fed, thereby increasing the emission of methane.
